Around the world on a shoestring

Global Convoy, England

Max White, 25, was working in computing when he decided he wanted to see the world. Short on funds, he bought one car for £75, and a friend bought another for £150, and put out an appeal on social media for like-minded souls.

“We didn’t want to spend a lot of money, because we didn’t have any,” says Max about his project, Global Convoy. “The only cost would be for fuel. We just wanted to get as many interesting people to as many interesting places as possible. The idea was to buy two cars and see how far east we could get. We ended up doing a full lap of the planet!”

“I just wanted to get as many interesting people to as many interesting places as possible”

The plan paid off spectacularly, as the convoy wound through Europe, Russia, Asia and the Americas. Extra vehicles would join along the way, and lifelong friendships were formed. “People said they’d come for a week and they’d still be with us seven months later,” laughs Max. “We must have done something right.” Joel Chevaillier, 29, was one. “We drove from Canada through to Latin America,” he says. “You learn a lot. The hospitality everywhere was amazing.” Kazakhstan was a highlight for Max. “They’re the friendliest people on the planet. Some oil workers helped us after we broke down. It was so eye-opening.”

“There’s so much camaraderie, we want to carry on spreading the word”

Becca Marsh, 25, also took part. “It opened my mind to alternative travel,” she says. “I’d have never thought about driving to America, but where there’s a will, there’s a way – and anyone can afford it, if you’re creative and work together. We bulk-cooked, and haggled to get group discounts at places like Machu Picchu. You don’t have to spend thousands.” The Convoy, who will soon be releasing a film of their exploits, are working on new trips and recently did one circling the Black Sea. “We want to keep it going,” says Joel. “There’s so much camaraderie, we want to carry on spreading the word.”
